Mosaic City, located along China's coast, is quite large city sometimes called the Crossroads Between Nations due to its diverse population. While it was once a large tourist spot, the city was placed under a blockade as the military appeared claiming there was a radiation leak. The true hazard, however, is much more sinister.
Several humans had complained about how this area was disgusting. The smell alone stuck with them for hours after leaving. Brynhild only had a vague understanding of how that sense even worked, something in the air drove the kids away. Conveniently she didn't notice anything, and once again praised the makers for being cheap efficient. Being one of the few immune to the unpleasant feelings, the android girl should obviously be the one to clear out this area.
Yes, Brynhild nodded to the empty sewer, this plan made sense. Practicing down here for a bit would save others from the supposed annoyance. Instead the hypothetical person could visit one of the safer areas, or even stay home for once. Wouldn't that be great.
Resting the weapon on her shoulder she continued exploring. Now that she committed to staying around, she actually had to find a Shadow. If there weren't any monsters left in here she had no reason to come back. Not having anything to fight would invalidate the entire strategy she just decided on.
Brynhild quickly cycled through her previous battles, searching for any relevant strategies. How long has it been since she last dealt with three at once? It took a second to stop herself from answering a rhetorical question. Crowd control was never her specialty. Most group battles were against other androids; no magic involved. This fight would serve as a good lesson for later.
“Who wants to die first?” she taunted, knowing that they couldn't truly answer. The shadows didn't seem to react, so she'd have to choose. Common sense advised starting with the last to arrive. Brynhild charged at the gross monster and activated her Persona. Better to soften it up with magic first. As she steadily ran through the tunnel, a sphere of ice flew through the air and hit the first opponent. After catching up she drove the tip of her spear into his gooey body. To the side, both ignored enemies flailed their arms around but their spells did nothing. The third was more proactive, having just been stabbed, and actually punched her. She made no attempt to block, and instead focused on summoning Berserker. The warrior spirit manifested an icy hatchet and struck once more with Bufula. It squirmed around for a second before eventually fading away.
Moving on to the Maya in the middle, Bryn sent Berserker to slash at its flesh—maybe chop of an arm or two. His blade bounced off the intended target, who appeared to be unfazed by what just happened. Okay. . . No time to figure out how that worked. The shadow's hand doubled in size, growing absurdly long claws at the end of its fingers. She put both arms up to block and her Persona followed suit. The gash across her forearm barely hurt, but indicated some damage to her circuitry. A practice swing of her weapon proved that the injured limb had a significant delay.
Well, she needed a handicap in order to keep this challenging. Despite how awkward and illogical it looked, the Anti-Shadow Weapon could wield her spear with one hand. Since the last spell she tried did nothing, trying more magic seemed like a terrible idea. Brynhild moved into range and thrust her lance forward. The shadow tried and failed to get out of the way in time. It created a familiar looking aura that even included the third shadow. They had the ability to increase their attack or defense. No matter what parameter had been buffed, letting it finish would give their side too much of an advantage. This fight needed to wrap up fast. As the shadow tried to add another layer of protection Bryn stabbed it twice. The monster disappeared without finishing its spell.
Just one more to go, then she could leave this awful place. Stinky Maya snapped its fingers and hit her with something unusual. Outwardly Brynhild didn't see any damage but couldn't help but feel nervous. She unconsciously took a step back, and the shadow raised its fists in triumph. It would not get excited over another spell failure. Ignoring any weird feelings, she commanded Berserker to strike back. Not bothering with fake weapons, the warrior kicked with all the power of a typical Assault Dive. The impact knocked the monster into the wall, but Bryn only felt more anxious. What if another group of enemies showed up? A second round of fighting would be the end of her.
Hold on, since when did the chance of dying ever scare her?
Shadowy shadow finally tried an attack that could hurt her. A blade of—oh gods, is that wind magic? Brynhild shuddered at the thought of getting hit, completely forgetting to dodge. The force knocked her legs out from under her. With a metallic thud she fell head first on to the ground, creating the worst concussion ever. A notice warned that a virus had made it past her firewall. It tried (and failed) to assure that the problem would be dealt with shortly. She didn't believe her system could do its job. Right now she only wanted to run away. Maybe if she felt better, the fighting could continue later.
Watching as the shadow boost its strength helped Brynhild realize there was no escaping this situation. Nothing prevented the enemy from attacking while she tried to leave. Now it would hither weakness even harder. No, the only way out was through. "Get rid of this guy Berserker!" She tried her hardest to sound natural while ordering him around, forgetting that he knew everything she did. An ice arrow fired from the Persona's invisible bow and struck the shadow right in its face/mask. The scream of pain that usually brought her joy had the opposite effect. All she could imagine was how badly any counterattack would hurt. Her tolerance for pain may be higher than most humans, but the idea of getting hit by that wind was terrifying.
Most of this fear was the result of a spell, but knowing that changed nothing. More hesitation allowed another layer of protection to stack up. The thing wanted to take her out in one move. She had to do the same in order to prevent the attack from happening. Brynhild bit her lip and tried to avoid freaking out for the next handful of seconds. Once this thing died she could safely give in until the virus got deleted.
"Go away!"
Her Persona fired a second shot, the arrow landing in its intended target. Not willing to risk the shadow surviving long enough for revenge, more ice was sent after it. The monster waved its hands as if it was about to finish but died before anything really happened. Still not satisfied, Brynhild launched one more round of attack before the dizziness caught up to her. She leaned up against the nearby wall and tried to recover from the overuse of magic. Once she got her stamina back, she would leave this sewer and not return for a very long time.
