Name: Kyle Shibata
Age: 21
Date of Birth: February 29th
Birthplace: Santa Monica, California
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Face Claim: Haru Yoshida from Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun
Appearance:
There's no escaping the fact that Kyle is tall. The guy's just barely shy of 6' 5" and he stands out in most rooms. He's not bad looking, except that his hair looks like a rat nest most of the time and he often sports a bit of a stylish stubble. The fact that he usually goes around with a scowl when not at work doesn't help. He always dresses very casually. He's got two stud piercings on each ear and a scar on his stomach from an operation. Much of the time he can be seen wearing his black barista apron.
Class: Persona-user
Arcana: Hierophant
Occupation: University student (Chemistry)
Barista at the Shakespeare and Co. bookstore cafe. Also does odd jobs around the town.
Weapons and Proficiencies (Optional): Two-handed fireman's axe, Slash damage.
Kyle has lived the tough life through and through and gotten into his fair share of fights. He knows how to survive and how to bring on the pain. Being the amateur handyman that he winds up being, Kyle knows how to use an array of tools but when time came to fight against some shadows, he grabbed a fireman's axe and hasn't looked back since.
Personality: Kyle has issues. Lots of them. While he's extremely good at putting up a calm and easy-going exterior for every day life, he's really the definition of 'mad, bad and dangerous to know'. He's quite the cynic under his cool-headed exterior and his blunter comments come rather out of nowhere.
He has quite a lot of disdain for almost everyone and his biggest problem seems to be with the majority of female population. It's not that he's a sexist bastard; he respects most women. He just doesn't want anything to do with most of them. A few too many negative experiences with women in relationships, work and family have left him with a very bad aftertaste and a biased opinion about the whole of the fairer sex.
He's also got a highly sarcastic opinion about family and has a slightly better opinion about the bonds of friendship. Any mention of or attempts to discuss his parents will result in a series of expletives and possibly, a fist to the face. His temper problem is pretty bad and although he makes a valiant effort to keep his anger in check for the sake of his job and his social life, it doesn't always work. He's lucky he's only been busted once for assault and minor battery.
Besides those little hiccups, Kyle is a man with a very level head on his shoulders. Give him a problem of any kind and watch him power through it, sometimes no matter the cost. He's a little gullible when it comes to information so he can get confused sometimes but we'll generally excuse that because he doesn't really get anyone other than himself in trouble or cause massive damage.
Usually.
Kyle can be surprisingly kind and considerate, when he manages to dig past his veneer of sarcasm and cynicism. If he feels some person is really worth his consideration he may be willing to forgive them a lot of faux pas after he's known them long enough. He'll go out of his way to do something nice for anyone down on their luck and if you ask him nicely, he might be willing to help you with anything within his power. He's generally protective of the few people he really holds in any regard, such as his uncle, his employers, the Kitanis, and some of his coworkers.
He keeps to himself much of the time and while he will talk with others he won't really reveal much about himself unless prodded. Carefully.
Kyle loathes feeling inadequate and being ordered around by people he doesn't respect. His temperament can make him hard to work with and he absolutely cannot stand feeling useless.
Above all, do not let appearances fool you. He may look like a dork and talk like a dork, but don't be deceived. He really is a dork.

History: Kyle was born in Santa Monica to a Japanese mother and American father. The first three to four years of his life were happy, until his father lost his job at an engineering firm. They fired him due to charges of fraud and the suspicion that he'd made a calculation error that resulted in the deaths of several people when a building constructed by the firm collapsed. He took that blow to his pride very badly and began drinking and taking his frustrations out on his wife and son.
Growing up, Kyle dealt with his family problems first by being very silent and shy, almost withdrawn. He had no friends, was almost absurdly quiet at school and said nothing when his father reprimanded him. He ran away when his father got drunk and verbally abused and beat his mother and usually just submitted when his father turned to him. His mother suffered in silence and even withheld the reasons for her son's injuries when taking him to the hospital.
And then he snapped.
When he was 15, Kyle nearly beat his father to death with a chair after another of his father's attempts to take out his frustrations on his wife. And then he proceeded to almost beat her unconscious too, because she had allowed all that to happen to her and to him without complaint.
The police intervened and through some remaining influence that his parents had, Kyle got off an assault charge. His Japanese uncle Kaito Shibata came all the way from Osaka and promptly decided to take him out of his parents' hands -- after chewing them both out for inflicting their problems on their son. He took Kyle with him all the way to Osaka first and later, to Tokyo. He resented this arrangement at first, and his uncle, but in time he grew to accept it and then even enjoy it. He came to love Kaito as a father figure and was appreciative of his uncle's eccentricity and bachelor life-style. He even legally changed his surname from his parents' to his uncle's.
A couple of years ago, they moved from Tokyo to Mosaic City to accommodate Kaito's new job -- a partnership with a local firm in prop-making, specifically replica weapons. Kyle liked the city and got rather comfortable. After graduating from high school he began considering options about university. He decided to go into chemistry for now, but his real dream is training to be a chef.
He got a job as a barista in a bookstore called Shakespeare and Co. in downtown Mosaic City. At first he found the job a bit of a drudge but he grew to like the owners, Hisako Kitani and her husband Ryouji, because they're straightforward, pleasant and all. about. the. books. The people are obsessed. He also discovered he has an almost absurd love and appreciation for not just tasting, but also making coffee. He's starting to warm up to his fellow employers too. Even that ball of pudge, Phoebe. He quite likes the muffins she brings for everyone's lunch-break.
Now as it happens, last week, something very strange happened. While on his way home from a late shift at the bookstore, Kyle got the unexplainable urge to go poke around the edge of the perimeter. Like everyone else, the installation of the exclusion zone around the city had puzzled him but he'd accepted it without qualms. Now he felt like taking a look at what was going on. He wandered into a deserted and dilapidated neighborhood and entered an abandoned supermarket. While looking around and musing how absurd this ghost town scenario was, a shadow crept up to him.
Kyle recalls being thrown to the ground by a heavy blow to his back. He turned over and saw a monster made of darkness about to attack him again. Before that happened, he felt a spear of headache lance his head and somebody speaking in his ear.
"I am thou. Thou art I..."
Kyle scrambled to his feet, dodged past the shadow and grabbed hold of a fireman's axe from a broken fire station on the wall. He spun around to face the monster as it barreled down an abandoned isle to get him and suddenly everything was crystal clear.
"Persona!"
On his way home, he took the fireman's axe with him.
