Name: Dr. Desmond Kurtz, PhD
Age: 32
Date of Birth: 5/4
Birthplace: America
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Face Claim: Kazuya Gavin - Persona 5 Imagining Project
Appearance:
Distinguishing Features: Nothing really comes to mind except a tattoo of the Hermit arcana on his upper right shoulder.
Height: 6'3"
Class: Veteran Persona-User
Arcana: The Hermit
Occupation: Hacker, Operative for 'The Org'.
Weapons and Proficiencies (Optional): For years, Desmond has been manufacturing his own gunpowder to use for explosives. In his school days, it was mostly for shits, giggles, and fun firework shows. He's perfected it over many fights with shadows to deal up to level 3 strike damage.
Personality: Desmond prefers his own company over large crowds. A technological genius, the company of computers and other high tech gizmos gives him more companionship than most other human beings. When forced to do so, he can operate fairly well in a crowd due to years of being put into teams for missions by his employer. Usually, he'll act behind the scenes, preferring to let others take the credit and steal the show. Hip in a way that doesn't seem forced despite his age, he's popular with students in a school setting and in tune with new developments on the world. A biting wit and heavy sarcasm is usually how he reacts to people that he views as 'stupid' or otherwise not worth his time.
When faced with someone that he feels could make a good pupil for part of or all of his skillset, he can be a lot more relaxed, more open but still on guard about certain things. Despite being a fairly patient man, his temper can flare fairly easily if someone manages to touch on a sore spot. At his core, he's a troubled man that isolates himself from others for numerous reasons while trying to make the best of his self imposed exile from the majority of society. Heavily introspective, he often finds himself thinking about why he makes the decisions he does after the fact. Much of his humor is self-deprecating as a result. Despite being 'only' 32, he is very wise and world-weary and will try to offer advice as best he can to those around him that manage to break through his armor.
Likes: Computers, American food, Rock n' roll, Breaking into networks
Dislikes: Digression, Stupid people, Large crowds, Oversleeping
History: Born to simple farmers in upstate Kentucky, Desmond quickly found himself isolated from his peers due to a difference in both intellect and hobbies. His parent bought him his first computer when he was in the middle of the 3rd grade and nothing ever made him as happy as the first time he connected to the internet. Suddenly, the whole world was at his fingertips and there was a lot of fun to be had. He began lurking chatrooms and quickly learned how people react in artificial terms. 90's chat rooms were certainly not a substitute for actual human interaction. The first time he ever hacked into something was innocent enough. He changed the banner of his school's home page to a picture of an anime cartoon character. Oh how furious everyone seemed to get.
His parents eventually moved to a big city in California and it was there that Desmond had his first encounter with shadows. The organization he would eventually join classified them by levels and poor Desmond found himself at the center of a level 3 incident during their high school years. It was a classic case of 'crawl before you walk'. It took him and his counterparts almost a year but the incident was solved. With the closing of the incident, everyone went their separate ways as they graduated high school. Staying in contact, they always tried to avoid mentioning the details of what happened considering the police probably wouldn't understand the details if their phone calls were tapped or e-mails were checked.
While in college, Desmond met a woman that captured his heart like no one else had. Rachel...a pretty name for a pretty girl. Her lifestyle choices complimented Desmond's own since they favored isolation and solitude. Desmond eventually graduated Valedictorian with a PhD in computer science. Thinking that his adventuring days were long past him, he got a job as an extremely overqualified high school computer lab teacher and welcomed a normal life occasionally broken up by fun hack sessions where he tried to found out if aliens were real in the pentagon database or not. For years, Desmond and Rachel had a pretty ideal life as they had their first child, a daughter that arrived healthy, happy, and bouncing.
Unfortunately, his life wasn't going to stay normal for very long. Another incident occurred where the school that he taught was sealed off for unknown reasons and filled with shadows. Luckily, the school had been mostly cleared out except for a few stragglers and (very unfortunately) Rachel. Given his previous experiences with the shadows, he rallied students and faculty alike and helped nudge them along to end the incident. It was only through great tragedy that he found the resolve to awaken to a more powerful Persona. The last shadow (who as often was the case with these things, was the most powerful) broke in to the area where the civilians were hiding and killed several people, his wife included.
Awakening to an anger he never knew was in him, Desmond's Persona evolved and made short work of the shadow. In the years that followed, he became a drunkard and was deemed unfit to care for his child. By the time he cleaned up his act and got over his grief enough to be a part of the child's life, it was already too late. She was gone, living with her grandparents with a court order to not allow Desmond to visit. Falling into an immature phase, Desmond quit work and dedicated himself to hacking full time, forming a vast network and sating his desire for isolation by building a wired network of walls around him and his heart.
His association with a group that he refers to as 'The Org' began five years ago after someone in the know mentioned that he had been at the center of two separate incidents involving shadows. Finding his expertise and skillset useful, he was offered a high paying job and (in his eyes) a chance to redeem himself for his failure to save his wife. He developed his skills further as he fought in numerous shadow related incidents and dedicated his brain power to figuring out better ways to kill shadows.
The day that he heard about Mosaic City going dark, he knew that he was going to be called in. He didn't know how big what was happening was, but he knew every agent not already on assignment was probably going to be deployed. Recon photos from satellites showed a barrier that couldn't be penetrated by normal means. The organization briefed him (vaguely) and told him to get into the area and stop the problem one way or the other. He was being teleported into the area with his equipment and some provisions. There'd be no going back once he was inside the city.
After entering the city, he paid for a room at a fancy hotel in cash and has essentially turned it into his mobile base of operations, complete with a maze of computers and wires as he attempts personal research into why shadows make the tools of his trade get all weird.
