'All men are their own island.' That was a strange strange saying. It didn't take much to guess what it meant -- suggesting that people could be entirely independent if need be -- but it still didn't quite translate well to reality. Many island nations just plain didn't have the resources to be completely independent of other nations. Pyxis had even read a piece once about an island colony that tried to do that, and eventually exhausted the island's limited resources and drove themselves to extinction.
...Picking apart human expressions was getting to be a bad habit of hers.
"I suppose you're right," Pyxis finally said. "I've never made a big deal about being what I am before. I'm not sure why I suddenly thought it mattered so much. We're all people, and at least until 'Heaven's Gate' is dispelled we're all in this together." And speaking of 'not sure why', since when had she started using the name her teammate had coined for the anomaly in actual conversation? Sheesh, she wasn't even in constant contact with him and he was still rubbing off on her. "I feel better now than I have since that fight," she said. "So thanks for that too."
She stood up again. There wasn't much she could do at the moment, and despite what she said about feeling better her current state probably wasn't a good one for fighting shadows in, so going right back into the shadow-infested zone was out of the question. But at the same time...she couldn't imagine the swing she'd been sitting on was designed to handle her weight for very long. "I guess we should start thinking about our next move, then."
