Layla continued to keep a close lookout for anything and everything as she made her way back through the old subway terminal. It wasn't just more shadows she was on the lookout for, although being able to spot and avoid them was definitely her first priority. It seemed that when this part of the city was abandoned, a lot of junk was left behind. Layla didn't fancy herself a scavenger, but so long as she was going to be exploring the dangerous outer areas of the city, she might as well take advantage of every possible opportunity. Discarded items could be worth something, and any money she could get could mean buying better equipment to make exploring easier in the long run. If nothing else, she wasn't going to be able to rely on training weapons forever. So, she picked up whatever she could as she made her way back. Most of it was probably junk, but perhaps some of it could be worth something. In the best case scenario, anything of value she sold would eventually find its way back into the hands of its former owners, but that was entrely outside of Layla's control. She couldn't worry about that.

Finally, she made it back, and ran into the strange blonde woman at the exit. The woman seemed suspicious, somehow, although not necessarily in a dangerous way. Not in the same way that the soldiers put her on edge after she awakened. There was very little doubt in her mind that the woman was up to something but, to Layla, it didn't seem all that sinister. She unloaded a small pile of junk for the woman, giving her a smile and saying "That's everything for now." She'd wanted to bring more, but hadn't been able to carry anything else that had caught her eye. Oh well, if it was still there she would get it next time.

Now able to get farther out without being forced to return and stay out longer, Layla was coming across more junk she could salvage and bring back. This time, she'd brought back as much as she could carry from a couple of trips to trade. She still wasn't all too happy about doing this, but after seeing the decay and destruction afflicting patches of the outer circle, she figured that bringing as much of it back as she could was for the best for everyone. It meant that what was still worth anything was being returned to human hands before it was destroyed, at least. Besides, she did kind of need the money now.

Junk recovered from actively expanding wreckage before it got blown up, and a few curiosities from a strangely intact village at the edge of the shadowlands. Layla's selection of junk to sell to the strange blonde lady was a bit better than usual this time, if only because of its rarity. Sadly, she was still limited by what she could actually carry, and that had been less than usual after how close the battle against the giant shadow had been. If she was lucky, that particular village would still be there the next time she managed to make it out that far. If so, then she could always just go back and bring more salvage items next time.

"Maybe I need a wheelbarrow or something," she commented idly while setting her items out for appraisal.

Car parts. Car parts. Almost nothing but car parts. Spare tire. Steering wheel, with column still attached. Radio with built-in CD changer and player, still fully intact aside from the fact that it had been ripped straight out of a car. A robotic arm from the assembly line. A few scraps of sheet metal. Maybe they could be melted down for weapons or something. Airbag. Just the bag, no air. Tire pressure gauge. And a few other assorted sundries. Car parts, of course.

Well, Layla thought, at least it was different from what she had brought back on her last few trips. Even if it was all just car parts.

More refuse, junk, and other things!



And more money.

This week, Layla had...more junk to sell. What else was new? Either there were fewer Persona-users than she had thought, or there was a lot more salvageable junk in the outer circle to go around than what would be assumed from the sheer amount of unsalvageable junk. Layla had noticed that high-activity areas, like the massive office building and the car factory, usually had large portions that were already stripped clean of anything that would otherwise catch her interest. Less-traveled parts of the outer circle, however, had a lot of undiscovered junk free for anyone to take. And that was what Layla had brought back today. Undiscovered junk.

And then be replaced by the weighted burden of money!

Layla's latest haul included a lot of mining equipment. The most notable item was a large pickaxe that had been wielded by a wrestler-looking shadow. The rest was, in fact, actual junk. A railroad spike, a few old torches, and some random crap that she would probably recognize if she knew anything about mining had been stuffed into a heavy-duty bag. On top of that, she had a number of discarded weapons and weapon parts, presumably from other persona-users who had thought to explore the minds. Well, that or they had been part of or used by shadows originally. Much like the pickaxe.

As it turned out, the hospital still had some things of value as well. Along with some remnants of some dancers originally dressed as a pair of doctors, nurses, and morticians, Layla had found some old hospital equipment that was still intact enough to be wanted by someone. Things like heart rate monitors, an old computer, and some basic checkup equipment. It took multiple trips and a little more effort to bring back than usual, especially with how large some of it was, but she still managed to have a decent haul by the time she went back to the junk dealer.

She'd also come across some medical records, but decided to leave those be for the moment. No telling where they'd end up if she sold them.

It was about that time of the week again. The new places Layla had explored were a bit lacking in things to salvage, so she'd ended up falling back on old places. It took a bit longer, with previous trips and other scavengers having cleared out most of the best stuff. But by the time Layla made her way back to the junk dealer she still managed to have a bag full of things that were probably worth selling. And if not, she'd at least make up for quality with quantity this time.

Still, she would have to find new places to salvage sometime soon. Maybe there would be something at the bottom of the massive sinkhole.
